The neo-Romanesque Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was constructed between 1891 and 1895 at the behest of Kaiser Wilhelm II in honour of his grandfather. After a destructive bombing raid in 1943, only the Memorial Church’s tower ruin survived. During the post-war era, the Kaiser-Wilhelm Church became the symbol of the resurrection of West Berlin.
After 4 years of intensive construction and renovation works, the Kaiser Wilhelm tower was completed by four buildings designed by architect Egon Eiermann in 1961. Church, tower, chapel and foyer combine the past and the present in a respectful harmony. A place of silence and prayer, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial Church is open to free visits or can be explored in a guided tour.
Piano concerts and chamber music are as much part of the musical repertoire at the protestant church as are organ and choir concerts. The impressive organ from 1962/63 enables a multitude of stylistic interpretations and attracts organists from all over the world.
